We are looking for caring, reliable and confident Personal Assistants to join an established team supporting a gentleman in his family home.

This is an opportunity for someone who wants to provide genuinely person-centred support, build a positive and trusting working relationship, and enable someone to live their life in the way they choose.

The gentleman has lived with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 (SMA Type 2) since childhood. This affects his mobility, and he requires support with a range of personal care, physical and day-to-day needs. Despite his physical limitations, he is very much in control of his own life and likes to direct his own care and daily routine.

He has a great sense of humour, knows what he wants and is able to express his wishes and preferences clearly. It is particularly important that his Personal Assistants take the time to get to know him and develop a strong, trusting and respectful relationship. As this relationship develops, he becomes increasingly comfortable and confident, enabling his Personal Assistants to understand his individual routines, preferences and the way he likes his support to be provided.

He enjoys gaming on his Xbox, watching YouTube, using social apps and going to the cinema. He also enjoys spending time at home and generally likes a relaxed routine. He can sometimes stay up until around 1am and often prefers a later start to his day.

About the Role

You will be supporting him within his family home and helping him to maintain his independence, comfort, wellbeing and preferred routines.

His support needs include:

• Personal care and assistance with washing and dressing
• Supporting his established bathing and personal hygiene routines
• Moving, positioning and physical support in accordance with his care plan and moving and handling guidance
• Supporting him to sit comfortably in his chair and change position as required
• Assisting with his established stretches for his arms, legs and neck
• Supporting other aspects of his physical wellbeing and daily routine
• Supporting his more complex healthcare needs following appropriate training and competency assessment
• Supporting him to access activities and interests, including trips to the cinema and other activities of his choosing
• Promoting his independence and respecting his right to make decisions and direct how his support is provided
• Observing and reporting any changes in his health or wellbeing
• Maintaining accurate and appropriate care records

His family are closely involved in his life and care. You will therefore need to be comfortable working within a family home and understand the importance of respecting the privacy, routines and boundaries of everyone living there.

Who We Are Looking For

The right personality and approach are extremely important.

We are looking for someone who is patient, dependable and comfortable taking direction from the person they are supporting. You should understand that being a Personal Assistant is about enabling someone to have choice, control and independence in their own life, rather than taking over or making decisions for them.

Building a strong and trusting relationship will be central to the role. Consistency and reliability are particularly important, and we are looking for Personal Assistants who genuinely want to get to know the person they support and understand how he prefers his care and daily routines to be carried out.

You will need to be confident providing personal care and comfortable learning how to support more complex physical and healthcare needs.

Previous experience within complex care or supporting someone with significant physical disabilities would be beneficial; however, we are also interested in applicants with the right values, personality and attitude who are willing to undertake the required training.

Hours and Pay

£16.00 per hour, with enhanced rates for Bank Holidays.

Both full-time and part-time hours are available, and working patterns can be discussed as part of the recruitment process.

This role is about much more than completing care tasks. We are looking for Personal Assistants who will take the time to get to know the gentleman, understand how he likes things done and become consistent and reliable members of the team supporting him.
